The story of the Persian Shah and the orchestral tuning, now an integral part of every anthology of musical jokes, originated in the 1890's when the then Persian ruler visited Europe. A concert was given in his honor in Paris. He listened patiently, and at the conclusion, was asked which piece he had liked best.
The Shah and Orchestral Tuning , from Slonimsky's Book of Musical Anecdotes.
